Logo's, your on in 5...

"They're most likely coming in the next five years", commissioner Adam Silver told an audience at the IMG World Congress of Sports on Wednesday March 19, 2014. The WNBA of the family of The Association is the first to really dig in with having corporate sponsors as the hero of the jerseys. It was Silver in 2011 who introduced the idea of logo’s on uniforms with an expectation of at least $100 million per year.

This would be a setup of one patch per team for starters. The ability for the teams to have local companies displayed on a global stage is one that other sports leagues have shared for years ala Soccer/Futbol. "We know what the value is to advertisers in a world of 1,000-plus channels to be able to show fans in-game branding," Silver said last month. (Adam Silver) 2009 saw the Phoenix Mercury becoming the first professional basketball team to be sponsored by a corporation. LifeLock helped to usher in the leagues first contract and as of April of this year, the league introduced three more multi-year contracts for the teams San Antonio with H-E-B, the 2013 WNBA Champion Minnesota with the Mayo Clinic, and Phoenix Mercury signed with a new partnership with Casino Arizona and Talking Stick Resort. The total amount of WNBA teams with the team name on the shoulder now, 6 all together.

“I’d say over the last five years or so, we have seen the interest in the WNBA increase and interest in the Mercury.” (Jason Rowley – President, Phoenix Mercury) With supporters like Magic Johnson buying the Los Angeles Sparks, have a great deal of influence to make the idea of not only selling merchandising ideas through the teams and players not only in the community, but all across the world. There are some great ideas of what some logo uniforms would look like on Uni-Watch.com. Check them out.

The Little Dog is Barking Louder...

With the possible signing of Under Armour’s first MVP, a $30 million dollar bounty is awaiting Kevin Durant for his services. This would be a huge step for the small up and coming sportswear and apparel company. This could also, like the ad, make Nike sweat just a little. For the past few seasons, Nike has been loosing players to other competition such as Dwayne Wade, Kevin Garnett, and even Kanye West. With that said, that is a good sign that there is room for completion now.

The ideas of not being able to get your ideas out on the floors and the fields because of the stranglehold the big boys have is now coming to an crossroad. The ability to make quality footwear now and the technology to give threat to the larger conglomerates at a more reasonable price is a testament to what the future holds for people like Under Armour. Given the fact that his first contract with Nike was for six years at $60, his next contract could potentially be worth $30 yearly for a possibility of six more years to ten. Not a bad deal. Also with applications of support from people like the UA CEO, Kevin Plank, he has been able to deliver on his word, along with NFL soon to be Hall of Famer, Ray Lewis, the unveiling of the city area high school uniforms.

This is something I have hoped to do for my city and have even written it in my business plan. The art of really giving back is a lost form. Check them out on www.baltimoreravens.com and also #Under Armour #Ray Lewis

“Though Under Armour’s predicted revenue for fiscal year 2013 ($2.2 billion) is still significantly less than rival Nike’s (NYSE:NKE) ($25.3 billion), it is clear that the Baltimore, Maryland-based Company is on the rise, and more than a couple competitors are taking notice.” (Emily Coyle) In such a short time, it is testament to see a company not even 20 years old make such a bold statement and monumental achievement. It is truly inspirational for designers like myself. Their projections of $2.2 Billion for the end of fiscal year 2013 is a tall push and they have the eyes of the competition. Look over your shoulders boys.

What TED Talk's have brought to my imaginative and processes of everyday life.

What has come to past is the fact that there is no limit as to how much you can learn and how you and learn it via the Internet. Video is the most optimal way to learn on the Internet and surely the ability to take and modify your new learning’s with the crowd accelerated innovation. The more you have the burn to get the ideas of what you want to do, the wanting to learn more about a topic, a hobby, a critical medical maneuver, it all has a how to on the Internet.

The way that these talks along with the mental capacity of how to become a better man, woman or child, there is a TED that is inspirational for everyone. What Mr. Chris has showed me as I have seen and read from other great executives in time, a polished presenter of the 18 minutes it takes to not waste any words used in his allotted time, but having a message of evolution and still make the information sweet to the ears is not a slight of hand.

Some of my favorite TED Talk speakers range from a variety of genre’s such as Renata Salecl: Our unhealthy obsession with choice. Her breakdown as to why we make things hard when we are making a choice makes me understand and feel that yes there is a fork in the road and yes, you cannot go back a ‘unchoose’ a choice made. Live for the moments and learn from them and leave the regret as much as possible.  Isaac Mizrahi: Fashion and creativity helps bring to me the build of inspiration that can help to make things different in my ideas of designs and thank the Gods that there is no law of stealing and manipulating a idea as your own because the TED Talk of Johanna Blakley: Lessons from fashion's free culture which goes on the to tell the way of explaining the rules of how fashion is not patented and how it helps to make clothing design so much better with innovation and ideas because of the ideas of other past and present designers.

And finally, the TED Talk of George Takei: Why I love a country that once betrayed me. His story of what happened to him as a 5 year old in the war torn world of America just after the Pearl Harbor event. Much like to day and the alienation of American Muslims being shunted after the September 11th 2001 events, really take the idea that segregation has not moved on in the human race as much as we think. People are still prejudice to a high level even though we have gotten better as a nation in far less time than other countries yet still we are still a growing and learning culture and excepting things is a pain staking movement alas same sex marriages, stand your ground rights and legalized drugs in states. We are always learning.

What is the (Sponsor) World Coming to in the NBA?

By

Duane .A Covington

With the unveiling of the new Charlotte Hornets Uniforms for the 2015 season and beyond. What is the pizzazz of the new outfits and fan gear that has the social media buzzing?

Lets look at it from two angles. One side we will get into it with a view of what makes them new and fresh and on the other hand, we will look at them with a ‘get off my lawn’ eye. Here are the uniforms of the Charlotte ball club from the beginning to the future and yes; you see there are no long sleeves in this mix. They did however take the NBA logo and put it on the back of the uniform. This is the first basketball uniform that displays the logo on the back in similarity of the Major Leagues.  This is in support of the fashion of displaying sponsors in the future.

Nike is the company and Team Jordan is the designer. Like the overall brand identity, the uniforms were designed in collaboration with senior executives within the Hornets organization; Jordan Brand, a division of Nike; and the NBA’s Global Merchandising Group. Both Jordan Brand and Nike have a long history of working with professional teams and universities in developing brand identities and utilize some of the world’s most highly recognized designers.” (NBA.com/Hornets)

The new lightweight construction of the uniforms help to bring in new ideas and landscapes for the future of adding locations for sponsorship logos. This also ushers in a more creative forward thinking of how to individualize more with designs more than ever before. The WNBA has been doing it for a while. Is it time for the big brother to finally do the same? Adam Silver, the NBA’s new commissioner say’s it is inevitable.

You can take the poll @ http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2014/06/19/4989171/poll-do-you-like-the-new-charlotte.html#.U6ciVKhRlWS and see what America is saying about the new threads.

What is your favorite, as these designs are now considered retro?

Who signed off and said good to go?

By Duane .A Covington
Tuesday 20, 2014

On the cuffs of the Charlotte Bobcats changing back to the Hornets, there has been a raise of eyebrows as to what their logos and uniforms will look like. As I look across the landscape to see what I can take a page from history and try to make a difference in what is up with the eye of fashion and sports uniforms. What can we do to not repeat the great cataclysms of the past few decades? In a top 3 list of choices that have proved to be bad choices and possibly bad choices not yet gone into fruition, we start with the new Tampa Bay Buccaneers uniforms. The idea is mostly made to ‘bring the boys to the yard’. It is yet to be seen as to how they will get reactions when kick off arrives.

The secondly, the whole Adidas fiasco needs to be called out. The Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Louisville, Baylor, Kansas and UCLA needed to have at least a neighborhood selection to make sure they do not waist their money and time like that in the beginning. “Don’t let the uniforms win. Look at them. Look at them. It isn’t until you feel like your senses are so confused and utterly abused, like you microwaved a cucumber and then ate it, that you should feel free to stop the metaphor.” - Posted on March 1, 2013 by SHANBANANA

The last to date has to go to my friends, the Norwegians. I love and have served in the some of my most memorable times in the city of Meymannah with my brothers there. I have to say I know they are some of the funniest people on the planet as well so it came to no surprise and brought a heavy laugh from the bowls of my soul when I saw the Norway Curling team uniforms for this past winter Olympics. “Even their own coach says he would only wear them at ‘a bad-taste party.’” - ADAM WITHNALL  Author Biography   Wednesday 22 January 2014

In any event, the people that have to put these on are brave in competitive spirit, and just down right brave 360° style. With that said, in most cases it would be best to make small changes in some cases and if you go all out for the fences, get more input. Change is hard, but sticking to your guns no matter what can sometimes hurt your thought process for your brand and the public.

Next BLOG will be about the top 3 uniforms that got it right. What are your worst unis?

Welcome to my new BLOG featuring gab on fashion in the world of sports.

Hello boys and girls,

This is the first of many questions and theories as to how to improve on the designs and also critique the designs of the world to make a better choice in the future. Some choices are good like Manchester United's many schemes. Other are not so great a catch like the Pittsburg Steelers throwbacks. In this forum, I invite all remarks as to what you, the people think about what can be made in this wide world of sports.
